Sweet Does
it Again for
PASS
Midsummer
150 Win |
N.
Woodstock,
NH
--
Barre,
VT's
Nick
Sweet
showed
once
again
that
you
can
never
count
him
out
as
he
roared
to
his
fourth
Pro
All
Stars
Series
(PASS)
Super
Late
Model
win
of
the
season
at
N.
Woodstock,
NH's
White
Mountain
Motorsports
Park
on
Sunday,
August
9.
Sweet
overpowered
defending
champion
D.J.
Shaw
on a
restart
with
11
laps
to
go
to
capture
the
PASS
Midsummer
Classic
150
as
seen
live
on
the
Northeast
Sports
Network.
As a
previous
2020
winner,
Sweet
started
11th
on
the
grid
for
the
main
event.
The
veteran
steadily
worked
his
way
through
the
field,
moving
into
the
top-five
on
lap
29
and
grabbing
the
third
spot
from
polesitter
Ben
Ashline
on
lap
52
with
Ben
Rowe
right
behind
him.
At
that
point,
Sweet
trailed
only
Joey
Doiron
and
Shaw,
who
had
combined
to
set
a
torrid
pace
in
the
early
going.
Sweet
kept
the
pressure
on,
moving
past
Shaw
on
lap
64
as
the
top
four
raced
under
a
blanket.
When
the
second
caution
came
out
on
lap
71
for
Scott
McDaniel's
stalled
machine,
Sweet
lined
up
outside
Doiron
and
got
the
break
when
the
green
flag
flew
once
again.
Shaw
followed
Sweet
around
the
outside
for
second
as
the
handle
started
going
away
on
Doiron's
car.
The
leaders
than
chased
each
other
through
traffic,
at
one
point
putting
more
than
half
the
field
at
least
one
lap
in
arrears
and
leaving
third-place
Rowe
in
the
dust.
As
the
race
passed
the
100-lap
mark,
Shaw
decided
it
was
time
to
make
his
move,
going
to
work
on
Sweet
and
eventually
snatching
the
top
spot
back
on
lap
106.
Just
as
Shaw
was
pulling
away,
though,
the
third
caution
came
out
with
19
laps
to
go
for
debris
on
the
back
chute.
Shaw
was
able
to
handle
Sweet
on
the
restart
and
seemed
in
the
catbird
seat
for
his
first
win
of
the
season.
But
with
11
laps
to
go,
Rowe
suddenly
slowed
in
turn
two
with
a
right
front
tire
going
down,
bringing
out
the
final
yellow
and
stacking
the
field
up
once
again.
This
time,
Sweet
showed
his
full
muscle,
wheeling
his
Maddog
Motorsports
car
around
the
outside
groove
and
back
into
the
lead.
The
defending
champion
was
no
match
over
the
final
11
laps
as
Sweet
picked
up
his
third
PASS
win
at
White
Mountain
this
year
and
padded
his
points
lead.
Jeremy
Davis
came
on
strong
late
to
win
a
duel
with
Ashline
for
the
third
position.
Derek
Ramstrom,
Rowe,
Travis
Benjamin,
Gabe
Brown,
Austin
Teras,
and
Johnny
Clark
completed
the
top-10.
Gray,
ME's
Tyler
King
continued
a
dominance
similar
to
that
of
Sweet's
in
the
PASS
Modifieds
with
his
fourth
victory
of
the
year.
King
was
locked
in a
back-and-forth
duel
with
Center
Conway,
NH's
Mark
Lundblad
Jr.
for
the
lead
with
10
laps
remaining
in
the
50-lap
event
when
Colby
Benjamin
spun
on
the
front
stretch
to
draw
the
caution
flag.
Lundblad
had
the
lead
with
the
green
flew,
but
on
the
restart,
Gary
Dwinal
got
turned
around
coming
off
the
second
corner,
and
King
won
the
race
back
to
the
yellow.
The
late
havoc
continued
on
the
next
restart
when
Joseph
Day
backed
hard
into
the
turn
one
wall,
and
during
the
caution,
Lundblad
was
forced
to
the
pits
with
overheating
problems.
That
left
King
to
cruise
practically
uncontested
to
yet
another
checkered
flag.
Shawn
Knight
took
advantage
of
the
chaos
to
finish
second
in
his
first
PASS
Modified
outing
of
the
season.
Dwinal
recovered
nicely
from
his
spin
to
place
third.
Kevin
Durgin,
Chandler
Harrison,
Spencer
Vaughan,
A.J.
Cates,
Milo
Washer,
Ashley
Beyea,
and
Justin
Larsen
rounded
out
the
top-10.
Waterbury
Center,
VT's
Tanner
Woodard
was
nearly
perfect
en
route
to
victory
in
the
two-segment
Allen
Lumber
Street
Stock
feature.
Woodard
won
the
first
25-lap
segment
going
away
after
charging
past
early
leader
Luke
Peters
following
a
lap-14
caution
for
Keegan
Lamson's
spin.
The
16-year-old
then
carved
his
way
through
the
field
to
finish
second
in
the
final
25-lap
segment
and
win
the
overall
with
a
total
of
three
points.
Defending
Thunder
Road
Street
Stock
Champion
Jeffrey
Martin
took
second
overall
with
finishes
of
fifth
and
third,
respectively.
Lamson
bounced
back
from
his
segment
one
spin
to
win
the
second
segment
and
place
third
in
the
final
tally.
Peters
and
Tyler
Pepin
were
fourth
and
fifth
overall.
E.
Corinth,
VT's
Brian
Putney
waited
until
the
last
possible
moment
to
snag
the
win
in
the
Burnett
Scrap
Metals
Road
Warriors.
After
winning
the
first
20-lap
segment,
Putney
found
himself
several
spots
behind
Oxford,
ME
invader
Eric
Parlin,
who
had
finished
third
in
segment
one.
As
the
duo
navigated
a
pack
that
also
included
Josh
Vilbrin,
Kevin
LaForest,
and
Justin
Prescott,
the
overall
title
seemed
out
of
reach
for
Putney.
However,
the
pack
got
bunched
up
on
the
final
lap
thanks
to
some
slower
traffic.
Entering
turn
three
for
the
final
time,
Putney
saw
an
opening
and
went
for
it.
Going
full
steam
ahead,
he
gained
two
spots
in
the
last
two
corners,
nipping
Parlin
by a
paint
job
for
fourth
in
the
segment
and
winning
the
overall
with
five
total
points.
Parlin's
third
and
fifth
gave
him
eight
points,
which
was
enough
for
second
in a
tiebreaker
with
Prescott.
Bear
Ridge
regular
Kevin
LaForest,
Sean
"Chubby
Rambo"
McCarthy,
Vilbrin,
Tyler
Whittemore,
segment
two
winner
Nate
"Tater"
Brien,
Jamie
York,
and
Frank
Putney
also
finished
in
the
overall
top-10.

Williamstown, VT's Jimmy

Best
of ACT, PASS, & Local Racing
Ready for a Classic
Weekend
at
White Mountain |
Waterbury, VT and
Naples, ME -- The
American-Canadian Tour
(ACT), the Pro All Stars
Series (PASS), and North
Woodstock, NH's White
Mountain Motorsports Park
are just hours away from the
biggest New England racing
weekend of the summer. The
second annual White Mountain
Midsummer Classic this
Saturday, August 8 and
Sunday, August 9 will
feature the premier stock
car touring series along
with a host of local racers
eager to take advantage of
their time in the spotlight.
(whitemountainmotorsports.com)
After a successful
Midsummer Classic debut in
2019, this year's edition
has expanded into a true
tour-de-force. Action kicks
off at 5:30pm on Saturday
with a 250-lap,
$10,000-to-win showdown for
the ACT Late Model Tour and
continues through Sunday
afternoon as eight divisions
and touring series vie for
checkered flags.
"This is going to be a
must-see weekend for anyone
who likes short track
racing," ACT and White
Mountain managing partner
Cris Michaud said. "Every
track or series needs
signature events, and that's
what the Midsummer Classic
has become for both ACT and
White Mountain. Adding PASS
this year and bringing in
multiple other outside
divisions has made it a
showcase for everything that
makes racing great."
"We're honored to be part of
an event that so many people
look forward to," PASS owner
Tom Mayberry added. "Whether
you prefer 8-cylinders or
4-cylinders, full-fender or
open-wheel cars, Super Late
Models or Street Stocks,
there's something for
everyone this weekend. And
thanks to the pay-per-view
option on Northeast Sports
Network, you can watch some
Thunder in the Mountains
from anywhere in the world!"
The Midsummer Classic
250 for the ACT Late Model
Tour has official
commitments from a who's-who
of winners and champions.
Defending PASS champion and
current ACT point leader
D.J. Shaw, multi-time ACT
winner Jimmy Hebert,
defending ACT Rookie of the
Year Ryan Kuhn, rising young
gun Dylan Payea, and
longtime Lee USA Speedway
standout Bryan Kruczek are
just some of the household
names traveling to North
Woodstock this weekend.
The ACT heavyweights
will be joined by a distinct
local racing flavor that
includes current Thunder
Road Late Model point leader
Marcel J. Gravel and former
White Mountain winners
Stephen Donahue and Jesse
Switser. Multi-time PASS
Champion Ben Rowe and former
Granite State Pro Stock
Series Champion Dillon Moltz
have joined the entry list
as well. Several other
notables from ACT, Thunder
Road, White Mountain, and
other tracks around the
region are rumored to be
making the trip, meaning it
will likely be a slugfest
just to get into the 250-lap
main event.
When
Sunday comes around, the Pro
All Stars Series rolls into
town. The PASS Super Late
Model entry list has been
growing all week for the
fourth series visit of the
year to White Mountain. Shaw
and Rowe are confirmed
double-duty drivers in both
the ACT and PASS events.
They'll be joined by
six-time PASS Champion
Johnny Clark, 2013 PASS
Champion Cassius Clark,
three-time Oxford 250 winner
Travis Benjamin, and
many-time PASS winner Derek
Ramstrom.
Numerous
rising stars are also on the
entry list, including Gabe
Brown and Scott McDaniel,
who snagged their first
podium finishes with PASS in
the last series visit to the
track. Although current PASS
point leader Nick Sweet is
not officially entered, the
Northeast racing legend is
widely expected to continue
the pursuit of his first
Super Late Model
championship.
Six
other divisions are spread
across the weekend for local
and regional racing fans. On
Saturday night, White
Mountain's Wells River
Chevrolet Flying Tigers,
Woodsville Guaranty Savings
Strictly Stock Mini's, and
Dads 4 By Tool & Supply Kids
Trucks. Each division has
grown throughout the year
and regularly puts on some
of the track's best racing.
Both the Flying Tigers
and Strictly Stock Mini's
have tight point battles to
keep an eye on. Two-time
defending Tiger Champion
Shane Sicard has won four of
the seven features but has
just a three-point lead over
the consistency of Jaden
Perry. Veteran Mike Clark is
doing his best to make it a
three-man dance. The roles
are reversed in the Strictly
Stock Mini's with Brett
Jackson holding a 12-point
edge over three-time winner
Tyler Thompson.
Sunday's undercard includes
the PASS Modifieds plus
Thunder Road's Allen Lumber
Street Stocks and Burnett
Scrap Metals Road Warriors.
Tyler King has been nearly
unstoppable in the PASS
Mods, winning 3 of the six
events and holding a
21-point lead over Justin
Larson. The 4-cylinder
Street Stocks and Road
Warriors will run
two-segment events as they
bring entry-level action and
fun on the road. The Road
Warriors are making their
first visit ever to White
Mountain while the Street
Stocks are returning for the
first time in 20 years.
The Midsummer Classic at
North Woodstock, NH's White
Mountain Motorsports Park
begins this Saturday, August
8 at 5:30pm. The
$10,000-to-win Midsummer 250
for the ACT Late Model Tour
will be joined by the Wells
River Chevrolet Flying
Tigers, Woodsville Guaranty
Savings Bank Strictly Stock
Mini's, and Dads 4 By Tool &
Supply Kids Trucks.
Action resumes Sunday,
August 9 at 1:30pm with the
Midsummer Classic 150 for
the PASS Super Late Models.
The card also includes the
PASS Modifieds, Allen Lumber
Street Stocks, and Burnett
Scrap Metals Road Warriors.
Saturday admission is
$25 for adults and $5 for
kids ages 12 and under.
Sunday is $20 for adults and
$5 for kids ages 12 and
under. Attendance is limited
to 50% of capacity per state
guidelines. Advance ticket
sales and camping
reservations are available
now at

The Northeast Sports Network
is also offering a live
pay-per-view broadcast of
both days at

for the Midsummer Classic
this Saturday, August 8 and
Sunday, August 9.
For
the ACT Late Model Tour, the
250-lap, $10,000-to-win
Midsummer Classic is rapidly
becoming a signature series
event. Last year's edition
-- the second running of the
event and first as part of
the ACT calendar -- went
down to the wire. After the
leaders tangled on a restart
with four laps to go,
three-time ACT Champion
Wayne Helliwell Jr. emerged
as the winner, edging
then-rookie Stephen Donahue
for the five-figure prize.
The encore is
anticipated to be another
can't-miss event. With well
more than $40,000 in prize
money and contingency
awards, the Midsummer
Classic is the richest ACT
point-counting event of the
year. The stars of Northeast
Late Model racing will be
out again to chase the
$10,000 top prize, including
Dover, NH's Helliwell;
multi-time PASS Champion and
current ACT point leader
D.J. Shaw of Center Conway,
NH; Spring Green winner
Jimmy Hebert of
Williamstown, VT; defending
ACT Champion Rich Dubeau of
Plainfield, NH; and current
Thunder Road Late Model
point leader Marcel J.
Gravel of Wolcott, VT.
"On the ACT side, we've
taken it race by race this
year, and so far it's worked
out," Shaw said. "I'm hoping
that my long-race experience
(from PASS) plays into my
favor, and if it does, I
think we'll have a shot. I
consider (White Mountain) my
home track, so anytime we go
there, it's close to home
and familiar. Hopefully it's
a good weekend all around.
We just have to get a little
better than we've been, but
we've been close, and we're
definitely optimistic to go
back there and try it with
the 04VT car."
As the
longest event of the year
along with the best-paying,
the Midsummer Classic winner
needs to have a perfect
night. Teams will have the
option to change tires
during the event, adding an
element of strategy to the
mix. In 2019, Hebert
attempted to run the entire
feature on the same set of
tires -- and was leading the
event until he got together
with Scott Payea on the
fateful restart.
"It's tough," Shaw said of
the strategy side. "You kind
of have a strategy in your
head, but if the cautions
don't fall when you want
them to, then it doesn't
work that way. The ACT
racing is also newer to me
for the most part. Hebert
not pitting to take tires
last year and being in
contention is something that
could never happen where I
usually race. There's
different strategies to
consider and options to
weigh, and we'll just have
to take it as it comes, I
think."
The
combination of speed,
stamina, and luck needed to
win next Saturday makes the
Midsummer Classic a
throwback to the "test of
man and machine" that stock
car racing was built on.
Whether Hebert gets
redemption, Helliwell goes
back-to-back, or an
up-and-comer such as
Christopher Pelkey or Dylan
Payea pulls the upset, it
will be a night to remember
in the White Mountains.
Then, on Sunday, August
9, the PASS Super Late
Models roll into town for
the Midsummer Classic 150.
Their fourth visit of the
year to White Mountain
Motorsports Park comes in
the midst of a razor-close
championship battle. Barre,
VT's Nick Sweet leads the
standings on the strength of
three wins in six events --
with two of those wins
coming at White Mountain.
Sweet won the 2016 ACT
championship and could
become the first driver ever
to capture both an ACT and a
PASS crown.
However,
he is just two points ahead
of two-time PASS Champion
Travis Benjamin of Belfast,
ME. Multi-time champions
D.J. Shaw, Johnny Clark, and
Ben Rowe aren't far behind.
They'll be joined by a
variety of Super Late Model
rising stars and reliable
veterans for an afternoon of
high-horsepower bullring
action.
Six other
divisions are on the card
for the fourth doubleheader
of the year at White
Mountain. They include
several of the track's
weekly divisions along with
the PASS Modifieds and two
four-cylinder divisions
making the trip from
Vermont's Thunder Road. With
something for every fan of
asphalt short track racing,
August 8 and 9 are must-see
events whether in-person at
the track or at home via
pay-per-view on the
Northeast Sports Network.
