7G for the
Win
|
Oxford, ME
--
Curtis Gerry
spent most
of his 2020
season in a
heated
battle for
the points
championship
at Oxford
Plains
Speedway
(OPS) with
Dave
Farrington
Jr. That was
a battle
that the
Waterboro
driver came
out on the
losing end
of at the
conclusion
of the
season.
Sunday's
battle was
no
different,
only this
time, Gerry
reigned
supreme
taking his
second Pro
All Stars
Series
(PASS) event
of the year
in the Lee's
Family
Trailer
Sales PASS
150.
Gerry
started the
main event
in the 13th
spot but
wasted no
time
charging to
the front.
By lap 38
Gerry had
the familiar
black 7g at
the point of
the field
and was able
to turn away
all
challengers
as he
clinched his
eighth
career PASS
victory at
the famed
3/8th mile
oval in
Oxford.
Gerry
survived
four
cautions in
his pursuit
of victory,
and while he
was never
seriously
challenged,
several
suitors took
turns laying
chase to the
veteran
driver. When
the dust
settled,
Sabattus
driver and
2020 OPS
Super Late
Model
Champion,
Dave
Farrington
Jr. came
home with
runner-up
honors.
Vermont's
Nick Sweet,
a five time
tour winner
in 2020
including a
win in June
at OPS,
brought home
the third
place
trophy.
While
Gerry paced
the way over
the last 112
laps, a war
was being
waged among
no less than
a dozen
drivers all
vying for a
podium
finish. Ryan
Robbins,
Alan Wilson,
Scott
Robbins, and
Rusty Poland
among others
all took
turns in the
top 10
putting on a
show for the
fans. Some
drivers were
committed
and stuck to
the
traditional
bottom
groove of
the
racetrack
while others
liked to rim
ride around
the very
top. With so
much room to
move and
find lines,
the battle
for second
through 25th
was
routinely
stacked up
with 3 wide
racing
action. At
race
conclusion,
Johnny
Clark, Josh
Childs, Ben
Ashline, Ben
Rowe, Joey
Doiron, DJ
Shaw and
Garret Hall
rounded out
the top 10.
The
Pro All
Stars Series
returns to
action next
Saturday at
1pm for the
season
finale and
the Coastal
Auto Parts
150. DJ Shaw
carries a 69
point lead
over Johnny
Clark as he
seeks his
fourth
career title
and Clark
his seventh.
The
Pro All
Stars Series
is
recognized
as North
America's
premier
sanctioning
body for
asphalt
Super Late
Models and
boasts such
marquee
events as
the
legendary
Oxford 250
at Oxford
Plains
Speedway and
the Easter
Bunny 150 at
the historic
Hickory
Motor
Speedway.

From
Worst to
First
|
Oxford, ME
-- No one
would have
blamed
Justin
Larsen if he
left the
most recent
race at
Thunder Road
in Vermont a
little bit
dejected and
ready to
pack it in.
After
contact with
the leader,
Larsen
bounced off
the wall,
affectionately
known as
"The
Widowmaker"
and ended up
tumbling
down the
front
stretch.
Despite
running 2nd
in points,
with 10 top
10's, Larsen
still had
not held the
checkered
flag. All
that changed
Sunday as
Larsen put
the battered
#18, orange
on one side
and black on
the other
side, into
the PASS
MODS winners
circle.
Larsen
started the
50 lap tilt
in the 11th
spot and
charged his
way to the
top 3 front
before the
midpoint of
the race. In
the cleanest
race of the
year for the
PASS MODS,
the contest
was only
stopped one
time late in
the race for
a multi car
spin off
turn four.
Without the
benefit of a
yellow, it
became a
race to the
front for
some of
faster cars
that hit the
setup
correctly. A
blistering
pace was set
by early
leader, and
rookie
contender,
Ajay Cates.
As the green
flag wore on
the handle
on the Cates
number 2
began to
fade while
Larsen
reeled in
the young
driver.
Larsen and
Cates locked
bumpers
briefly as
Cates tried
to keep his
car pinched
to the low
side
protecting
the bottom.
It was
enough for
Larsen and
King to get
by with Zach
Bowie in
tow.
From that
point Larsen
was able to
hold of some
stern
challenges
from current
point leader
Tyler King
as he
secured his
second
career PASS
MODS win.
After the
contact with
Larsen,
Cates fell
back but
engaged in
an epic
battle with
King and
Bowie for
podium
rights over
the last 10
laps. King
proved the
best of the
three, if
only because
if track
position, as
Bowie
applied
constant
pressure to
the 5 time
winner this
year.
Bowie's
third place
run was his
best finish
in the 00
Bill Lake
owned MOD,
and he may
well have
been the
fastest car
on the track
at the end
of the race.
Cates held
on for a
career best
4th place
run while
Chanler
Harrison
scored his
second top 5
of the
season.
The PASS
MODS are
back in
action next
Saturday at
1pm for
their season
finale at
OPS as a
part of the
Coastal Auto
Parts 150.
Tyler King
holds a
commanding
lead over
Justin
Larsen while
leading
rookie Kevin
Durgin sits
in the third
spot. |

Oxford, ME
-- Big
Money, big
tires, and
big car
counts were
all on the
line Sunday
for the
Street Stock
Open Twin
50s. Over
$5500 in
posted
awards were
up for grabs
between the
two race and
the overall
points
champion for
the double
duty
contests.
Matt Dufault
paired his
Race 1
victory with
a third
place run in
Race 2 to
secure the
overall win
and the $500
bonus. Billy
Childs Jr.,
the Race 2
winner after
apparent
victor Adam
Lovejoy ran
afoul of the
tech
department,
coupled that
win with a
5th place in
Race 1 to
secure
runner-up
honors in
the overall
standings.
It was
Child's
maiden
voyage on
the 10 inch
tire that is
used in the
open
contests and
the Honey
Badger
Street Stock
Series.
Dufault
slipped past
early leader
Jordan
Russell, who
had an
impressive 3
wide charge
to the front
in his heat
race to
start on the
front row,
and was able
to hold on
for the
victory in
segment one
of the two
race
contest.
Russell held
on for the
second spot
while Kyle
Treadwell,
making a
rare start
in a
borrowed
ride, came
home third
in segment
one.
Rounding out
the top 5
were Dan
Brown and
Billy Childs
Jr.
This set the
stage for
Race two as
the lead lap
cars were
inverted and
the rest
were placed
on the rear.
Dufault
started
ninth while
Billy Childs
Jr. started
fifth.
Childs
quickly made
his way to
the front
where leader
Adam Lovejoy
resided in
the car
numbered X.
Childs spent
the better
part of the
second half
of the race
challenging
the leader
on the
outside,
only falling
back
briefly. 6
cautions
slowed the
field and
eventually
let Childs
back to the
front one
more time
where he
would remain
for the rest
of the race.
Rookie Alex
Mowatt, the
2020 OPS
Bandit
Champion,
wowed the
crowd as he
ran in the
top 3 and
challenged
Childs for
the win
before
settling for
second in
his first
start in an
8 cylinder
car. Dan
Brown, who
was pulling
double duty
in his
street stock
and in Mark
Simond's
PASS MOD,
used a pair
of
consistent
races
finishing
fourth and
fifth to
secure the
overall
third place
finish.
The
Honey Badger
Street Stock
Series wraps
up its
season next
Saturday at
1pm as a
part of the
Coastal Auto
Parts 150 at
Oxford
Plains
Speedway.
Jordan
Russell sits
atop the
standings
ahead of
Dufault and
Mike Haynes.

Rowe Snaps
Long ACT
Winless
Drought at
OPS
as Hebert
Locks up
First Title
Belanger
Overwhelms
Field in
Flying Tiger
Oxford Open
|
Oxford, ME
--
Turner, ME's
Ben Rowe and
Williamstown,
VT's Jimmy
Hebert took
home the
glory of the
American-Canadian
Tour (ACT)
season
finale at
Maine's
Oxford
Plains
Speedway on
Sunday,
October 18.
Rowe broke a
long ACT dry
spell with
his victory
in the Lee's
Family
Trailer
Sales &
Service 150
while
Hebert's
third-place
finish
clinched his
first ACT
Late Model
Tour
championship.
For
Rowe, it was
the
multi-time
Pro All Star
Series
champion's
first win in
an
ACT-sanctioned
event since
2006 -- a
drought of
more than 14
years.
Hebert,
meanwhile,
finally
claimed a
title after
having
finished
second or
third in the
ACT
standings
four
different
times during
his career.
Stark,
NH's Jamie
Swallow Jr.
set the
early tempo,
snatching
the lead
from
polesitter
Marcel J.
Gravel
amidst a
trio of
early
cautions.
Once the
field got
going,
Swallow
checked out,
putting
several
seconds
between
himself and
a raging
battle that
included
Ryan Kuhn,
Rowe, Tom
Carey III,
D.J Shaw,
Derek
Gluchacki,
and others.
Swallow
ran away
again
following a
pair of
lap-42
yellows, but
when the
race resumed
after a
lap-62 red
flag for
T.J. Laro's
head-on
frontstretch
crash,
things
tightened up
at the
front. Rowe
stuck with
Swallow this
time around
while Shaw,
who entered
the event as
the only
driver who
could catch
Hebert for
the title,
also got
into the
mix.
After
following an
increasingly
loose
Swallow
through some
lapped
traffic,
Rowe put his
Ford to the
inside
entering
turn one on
the 81st
circuit,
completing
the pass
just before
the seventh
caution flag
flew for
Jeff
Lebrecque
Jr.'s spin.
Swallow put
his bumper
back ahead
for a lap
following
the restart,
but Rowe
surged in
front once
again the
next time
around.
Hebert,
who by that
point needed
only a
16th-placce
finish to
salt away
the
championship,
then put on
a blitz of
his own. The
Vermonter
moved into
third
following
the lap-81
caution and
slid into
second after
a lap-107
yellow when
Peyton
Lanphear
climbed the
dirt pile in
front of a
backstretch
light pole.
As Swallow
and Shaw got
shuffled
backwards,
the
Massachusetts
trio of
Carey, Kuhn,
and
Gluchacki
rejoined the
fray.
One
final
caution
after
Lebrecque
pounded the
wall on the
front chute
set up a
36-lap
shootout to
end the
season. As
the laps
wound down,
Rowe,
Hebert,
Carey III,
and Kuhn
broke away,
running
inches apart
for the win.
Carey got
beneath
Hebert for
second with
five laps to
go and made
a run at
Rowe, but
the crafty
veteran held
him off by a
car length
for the win.
Carey's
second-place
finish was
still the
best of his
ACT career.
Hebert took
third and
the
championship
along with
it. Kuhn
came in
fourth while
Gluchacki
secured the
ACT Rookie
of the Year
award with a
career-best
fifth-place
result.
Swallow,
Stephen
Donahue,
Erick Sands,
and Gravel
rounded out
the top-10.
Young
hard charger
Ben Belanger
of
Whitefield,
NH put on a
master class
in the ACT
Flying Tiger
Oxford Open
to pick up
his second
win of the
season.
Belanger
started on
the outside
pole and
immediately
put his
fender out
front of
Hardwick,
VT's Jaden
Perry. After
running
side-by-side
for several
laps,
Belanger got
clear and
immediately
started
driving away
from the
field.
Reigning
Thunder Road
Flying Tiger
champion
Jason
Woodard got
around Perry
for second
following a
lap-23
caution for
Colin
Cornell's
stalled
machine.
Waterbury
Center, VT's
Woodard did
his best to
try and
snooker
Belanger on
two
subsequent
restarts,
but Belanger
had more
than enough
to counter.
The
youngster
pulled away
following
the final
caution at
lap-42 to
win by a
straightaway
over
Woodard. All
three of
Belanger's
career
Flying Tiger
victories
have now
come in
75-lap
races, with
the Oxford
Plain
Speedway
triumph
joining two
at New
Hampshire's
White
Mountain
Motorsports
Park.
Behind
the lead
duo, the
action
stayed hot
with the
rest of the
frontrunners
swapping
positions
back and
forth.
Thetford,
VT's Brandon
Gray picked
his way
through the
pack to
finish a
strong
third.
Kelsea
Woodard made
a spirited
run at
catching
Gray in the
closing
stages
before
settling for
fourth. Sam
Caron,
Cameron
Ouellette,
Perry, Bryan
Wall Jr.,
Tanner
Woodard, and
Kevin
Streeter
completed
the top-10.
The 2020
American-Canadian
Tour racing
season is
now
complete.
The status
of the
annual ACT
Banquet of
Champions is
up in the
air pending
local health
and safety
guidelines.
The 2021
schedule
will be
announced
before the
end of the
year.
