Brandon Ward Scores the
Hat Trick at Anderson; Winning the
Firecracker 150, Taking over the
Championship Points Lead, and
Securing a Spot in the All American
400 |
Charlotte, NC 7/5/12-
Brandon Ward timed things out
perfectly running down Landon Cling
from ten car lengths back and then
out dueled the youngster on a lap
127 restart to pick up his second
career win and his second win of the
season. In addition to the win Ward
took over sole possession of the
PASS South championship points lead
and also earned himself a guaranteed
starting position for the $22,000 to
win All American 400 at the
Nashville Fairgrounds Speedway in
October.
“It took this team a
long time to get their first win in
this series, but I’m sure glad it
didn’t take as long for them to get
their second,” stated an excited
Brandon Ward from Anderson Motor
Speedway victory lane. ”This win was
huge because it gave us the points
lead and it also gives us an
automatic starting position for the
All American 400 in October. I have
to thank all my sponsors Foothill
Ford, KPmoto.com, and every single
one of my crew guys for their hard
work all season.”
The holiday
event kicked off with Jay Fogleman
setting fast time after topping the
charts throughout the day’s previous
practice session. It was Ross
Kenseth who didn’t make it to the
track until right before the second
practice session that had the lucky
fingers as he redrew the pole
position in the series drawing of
the top ten qualifiers. The position
allowed the Wisconsin native to jump
out to the lead over the
twenty-three car starting field.
After just 15 laps the field settled
into single file racing with lots of
give and take early on as drivers
were noticeably racing smart to be
there at the end, and have a shot at
the win and that all important
automatic starting position for the
All American 400 in Nashville.
A driver who last raced with the
series in 2007 at the same Anderson
Motor Speedway was Johnny Brazier of
Lickskillet, Alabama. Brazier stayed
glued to the rear bumper of Kenseth
riding in the second position until
Kenseth decided the pressure was too
much too early and waived Braizer to
the lead on lap thirty-nine. Just
after Brazier took the top spot the
yellow flag would fly on lap
forty-one for the first time for
Kyle Bonsignore making hard contact
with the turn two wall. As quick as
Brazier lead the field back to green
was as quick as his #71 machine
would fall to the inside of the
field and off the field with an
apparent miss in the power plant.
This gave the lead to Kyle
Grissom for the next fourteen laps
before Landon Cling decided to flex
his muscle and make his way to the
front taking over the lead on lap
sixty. The Arizona driver then opens
up a ten car length lead over the
runner up spot while leading the
next sixty-six laps before the
spinning car of Florida driver Ken
Lilley displays the yellow for just
the second time. This was exactly
what Brandon Ward, who had shrank
Cling’s lead down to a car length
just before the caution, needed to
make his move for the win. Ward’s
better abilities through the gearbox
allowed the #62 machine to get out
front and never look back giving his
New Day Motorsports team their
second win of 2012.
